Gilbert Van Hassel

CEO ING IM

Gilbert joined ING Investment Management Europe as a CEO in 2007, to become global CEO for the ING IM business in October 2009.

Gilbert has nearly 27 years of experience in finance and asset management. Prior to working at ING, he worked as Managing Director & Global Head of Technology and Operations at JP Morgan Asset Management in New York. His international career at JP Morgan included positions as Global Head of Fixed Income for JP Morgan Asset Management and Regional Head of Private Banking and Asset Management Asia. Gilbert also held positions in Global Markets, Corporate Finance and Securities Services.

Gilbert holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Economics from UFSIA, Belgium, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from KUL, Belgium and a Master’s degree in Finance from Purdue University, USA.

Michel van Elk

CEO ING IM Europe

Michel was recently appointed CEO ING IM Europe, with overall responsibility for the company’s business and investment strategy. In addition he is Chief Marketing Officer a.i. As such he is responsible for all marketing and business development activities in Europe. Michel joined ING Investment Management in 1985 and he has a broad background in all aspects of the asset management business. He was appointed managing director of Institutional Clients in 1993. In 1998, he took on the role of CEO of ING Investment Management Australia. In this position he was also a member of the Regional Management Board ING IM Asia Pacific. In 2002, Michel van Elk returned to the Netherlands to join the Management Committee of ING IM Europe. Michel is a board member of DUFAS (Dutch Fund and Asset Management Association) since May 2008. He obtained a Bachelors degree in 1983 and a VBA degree in 1989.

Jeff Becker

CEO ING IM Americas

Before being appointed CEO of ING IM Americas in October 2009, Jeff was Vice Chairman, Chief Operating and Financial Officer for ING Investment Management Americas. Jeff joined one of ING Investment Management’s predecessor asset management companies in 1998 and ultimately served as its Chief Financial and Administrative Officer responsible for its financial, operating, technology and other support organizations. Prior to joining ING, he was Chief Credit Officer and Group Head, Portfolio Valuation & Analysis for Aetna’s Real Estate Investment Group. Before joining Aetna in 1994, Jeff was a senior manager in Arthur Andersen’s financial consulting practice.

Jeff earned a B.A. in economics from Colgate University and an M.B.A. in finance from New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Grant Bailey

CEO ING IM Asia/Pacific

Grant Bailey is the Chief Executive Officer for ING Investment Management Asia/ Pacific, a position he assumed on 12 August 2010. Grant has been with ING IM for nearly nine years, most recently as the Regional General Manager responsible for the investment management businesses in China, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.  
 

Grant originally started with ING in Australia. He was the CEO of ING IM Australia from 2003 until 2007. Under his stewardship, assets under management doubled, and the foundation was established for a successful stand-alone investment management business outside ING’s insurance and wealth management joint venture in Australia. 


Grant then established ING IM’s greenfield investment operations in Dubai from 2007 to 2009, ING IM’s gateway to the Middle East and North Africa, which was the first foreign asset manager with an investment team on the ground in the region.  

Prior to ING IM, Grant was with Citigroup Asset Management where he held various senior positions including CIO and CEO for Australia and New Zealand, and Managing Director and Head of Investment for Asia Pacific based in Singapore.  


Before moving into investment management, Grant was Chief Economist for Citibank Australia following a fourteen-year career with the Australian Treasury where he worked in a number of areas including international finance, fiscal policy, debt management and a posting to the Australian Embassy in Washington in the late1980s as Counsellor (Economic).  


Grant holds an Honours Economics Degree from the University of Adelaide, Australia.

He is married with two adult children.

Jonathan Atack

Chief Financial Officer

Jonathan joined ING Group in January 2004 as Head of Investor Relations. In 2008 he was appointed Chief Financial & Risk Officer for ING IM Europe. Prior to working at ING, Jonathan has built up over 18 years of experience in a variety of investor relations, finance and investment banking roles including Head of Investor Relations at Royal Bank of Scotland, Six Continents and easyJet. He also has a background in financial planning and corporate finance, including positions at Bass International Brewers, Close Brothers, Cazenove & Co. and Kleinwort Benson.

Jonathan studied Engineering Science at Pembroke College, Oxford University, Corporate Finance at the London Business School and holds an MBA from London Guildhall University.

Jan Straatman

Chief Investment Officer

Jan joined ING to become Chief Investment Officer for ING IM Europe in August 2008. Jan has over 26 years of experience in the international asset management industry.

Before joining ING, he was CEO/CIO of Pearl-Axial Investments. Prior to that, he held various positions in the field of asset management and pensions, including those of CIO Capital Markets of ABP Asset Management, Director of Asset Management at Achmea Global Investors, and Senior Vice President of GIM Capital Management in Eindhoven and New York.

Jan obtained an MBA from the University of Hasselt in Belgium.

David Suetens

Chief Risk Officer

In September 2008 David was appointed Chief Risk Officer for ING Investment Management Europe. Previously David was active as the Global Head of Compliance, Legal and Risk Management for ABN AMRO Asset Management and member of the Management Team. He continued in this role with Fortis Investments after the separation from ABN AMRO Group till June 2008. David was also Chair of different SICAV Boards in Luxembourg. He worked for ABN AMRO since 1998, where he held various senior global positions within ABN AMRO Bank in London and Amsterdam. Before joining ABN AMRO he was a product-manager with EUROCLEAR for two years. He started his career with Bank Brussels Lambert, Brussels. David holds a degree in Investment Advice from St Aloysius University (Brussels) and is a Faculty of Law – Juris Doctor from the Catholic University Leuven. He holds a Masters degree in International Banking Law and Finance from Boston University School of Law.

David Eckert

Chief Operating Officer

David joined ING IM Europe to become Chief Operating Officer in September 2008, responsible for the company’s technology and operations. David spent 14 years working for JP Morgan in global leadership in the field of Technology, Operations, IT and Infrastructure in the US, Europe and Asia. In his last position as Chief Information Officer, he was responsible for the worldwide IT infrastructure and applications development for JP Morgan Asset Management.

David earned his Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Investment Banking from the University of Wisconsin.

Maaike van Meer

Global Head Of Legal and Complaince

Maaike started out as Head of Legal & Compliance, responsible for managing the company’s Legal and Compliance activities, at ING Investment Management Europe in 2005.

Before joining ING, she was a civil law notary and partner at the law firm Van Doorne in Amsterdam. Her specific areas of expertise include Corporate Law, Corporate Governance, Capital Markets, Asset Finance and Project Finance. She started her career at law firm NautaDutilh in 1993, first as a candidate civil law notary and from 1998 at NautaDutilh in London. She was appointed as partner in 2001.

Maaike obtained a Master’s degree in Law from Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Caroline Baker

Global Head Of Human Resources and Corporate Communications

On 1 September 2009, Caroline started in her role as Global Head of Human Resources for ING Investment Management.

Caroline has 23 years of senior management experience in the field of Human Resources, of which the last 15 years she has held various leading positions within asset management companies. Before moving to ING, she was Executive Director of Human Resources for Hermes Fund Managers.

Previously, in 2001 Caroline was appointed Global Head of Human Resources of ABN Amro Asset Management, member of the Management Team. Prior to this, she obtained 15 years of Human Resources experience in various senior management positions for Pareto Partners, Towers Perrin/Tillinghast and M&G Group plc. Caroline earned a degree in History from Birmingham University.
