Investment Management

Our History

Our parent company ING Group was founded in 1991 by a merger between Nationale-Nederlanden (insurer) and NMB Postbank (bank). ING Investment Management was formed in 1994 by integrating the asset management activities of ING Bank Asset Management and Nationale-Nederlanden Asset Management.

We have an investment history going back as early as 1845, which can be traced back to the insurers ‘De Nationale Levensverzekering Bank’ and ‘De Nederlanden van 1845’. We are able to draw on an extensive experience in managing pension fund assets in the Netherlands (for over 40 years), one of the most sophisticated pension market in the world.

In the Asia Pacific region ING Investment Management has been managing assets for pension funds, institutional and retail clients for over 25 years. We marked our first presence in Australia in 1982 after acquiring 50% interest in ‘Mercantile Mutual’ which has a history of asset management since 1878. In 1997, the regional office was established in Hong Kong. For the last two decades, we have expanded our expertise to 12 locations across the region, such as Hong Kong, Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

While in the Americas, the history of ING Investment Management began in 1973, when a predecessor firm registered as an investment adviser with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In the 1990s, ING Group acquired a number of independent investment advisers that were integrated under the ING brand in the period from 2000-2003. Among these were Aeltus Investment Management, Inc., Furman Selz Capital Management LLC and ING Advisors, Inc., which merged as of June 30, 2004 to become ING Investment Management.

During its existence, ING Investment Management has grown into a global asset management company. Our ambition is to be a top-tier ‘active’ asset manager. Our mission is to build an information advantage through original research dedicated toward development and delivery of customised client investment solutions with services such as Fiduciary Management, Asset Liability Management (ALM), Strategic Asset Allocation (SAA) and Tactical Asset Allocation (TAA) and Multi Manager services (MtM).
